Tickled Pink by Wedding Bliss

*da dum da dum, daaaa dum da dummm* *here comes the blog post all typed in black and white*
This year has been a beautiful year of love and weddings! So far I've been to three wonderful weddings with another one on the way!

I recently attended a Nigerian traditional wedding of one of my college buddies. It was such a joyful day! It truly is wonderful to see the people you have seen grow up step into this whole new phase of their life. One day by grace it will be my turn... eeekk! But my knight has got to find me first... but that is another story for another blog post...

My outfit for the traditional wedding was far from traditional Nigerian  wear as I intended to go down the traditional route for the couples white wedding.

On a recent expedition to River Island to see if I can spend the gift voucher I have had for almost 2 years, I found this bright pink long sleeved midi dress on SALE for only £12!! O the joy that filled my soul!

I teamed the dress with my beaded collar from Dorothy Perkins, suede wedges from New Look and my mums box bag which added a vintage touch.

This outfit was simple and so comfortable! Plus the fact I got it on sale was an extra whoop!!

Its been a while since I last posted. I was all the way in bonnie old Wales where there was more sheep than good reception! I hope everyone is all good though?

Trend Watch: The Little White Dress (LWD)

Hey Up!

Welcome to another weekly fashion dose of TMQ!

We have all heard of the Little Black Dress (LBD) but what about the Little White Dress (LWD)?

The LWD is fast becoming a fashion must for the summer. For a modesty conscious lady a Midi White Dress (MWD) is the perfect alternative!

Scroll down to see how MWD's have been worn this season.

   Which style would you wear?

Which style is your favourite?

Get the Look!

This MWD from ASOS is the perfect addition to any wardrobe and at £40.00 is an inexpensive investment.

I love the contrast of crisp whites and bright colours, hence why I have teamed the MWD with the bright coral clutch and sandals from New Look.

However, this MWD can also be paired with simple black or nude accessories. The beauty of the MWD is that it is very versatile and can be tailored to suit your own style. :)

Just wanted to say a huge THANK YOU to everyone who has followed and supported The Modest Quirk be it via Facebook, Instagram, Bloglovin or just through your words of encouragement! Really appreciate you all!

God bless you, and until the next post, have a lovely week

STYLE FIX - DENIM LOVERS ONLY!

Akwaaba!!

Calling all denim lovers everywhere, this post is for yall!

Since its invention in 1873 by Levis Strauss *pushes back nerdy glasses* denim has been a wardrobe staple for both young and old(er), guy and girl.

I love denim, due to its practicality and it is very versatile. It can be worn for a casual day out or dressed up for a classy night out.

The only problem I have had is with denim skirts and dresses. It is always a struggle to find denim skirts which look good, but are also a decent length. However, once I find one it becomes my BFF and I find ways to work it into every outfit!

I channelled my inner denimista (yes, i make up random words at a whim lol) and threw together this outfit for a lunch date;

Leather Jacket and skirt - from Miss Selfridges, Bag - my mothers wardrobe :), Boots and denim top - emm.. purchase location unknown (had them for a while, totally forgotten where I purchased them from)!

Scroll down to see how this good old wardrobe staple is being styled in 'the streets'.

Designer Spotlight: Elie Saab

Hey Lovelies!

Are you looking for a beautiful, stylish, yet modest gown to wear to a prom, ball or a fancy shmancy black tie event? Then look no further than the fabulous designer Elie Saab.

I recently discovered the popular Lebanese designer and I must admit; with his attention to detail and impeccable craftsmanship, I have fallen head over heels in LOVE

I am captivated by his exquisite pieces, which just call out to me - "you know you want me, just sell a few organs and you can purchase me!". Just a smidgen OTT I know...Sigh...one day eh..!! But in the mean time I can admire them from afar.

Although he is not an exclusively 'modest' dress designer, his collections have a few pieces which cater to the modern fashionista. Check out a few of my favourites from his 2013 and 2012 collection below.

Which one from each row is your favourite? Leave a comment below :)

50 FREE things to do in London

*Sings* "Maybe it's because I'm a Londoner, that I LOVE London SO!!!"

A brief interruption to my regularly scheduled blogging:

For all my fellow Londoners, or visitors to the big city, check out the link below for 50 things to do in London for FREE!

This appeals to me because I am a bargain hunter and what can be more bargainous (is that even a real word?) than free things! I am planning to go to the science museum this weekend, apparently I can take a tour in a cockroach suit?! Can't wait! :D

Why not visit a few of the places on the list or discover your own fun, weird and wonderful things to do in London. I would love to know whether you tied anything on the list and if you have anywhere that you would recommend that I should try.

Life is too short to not explore, discover and create!

Aztec Print Hunters! Modestly tribal!

Shhh....

We are walking through dense, wild, terrain, the scorching sun of central mexico barely visible through the trees. Danger lurks at every corner... I hear you ask; why are we here? I reply.... To look for Aztec inspiration for this next blog post! :-D

Nextili!!! How are you all?

In line with the come back print of the season, this post is inspired by all things Aztec! Aztec print is funky and versatile, the colours and shapes vary from each print. A cardigan in this print is a great way to add some funk to a plain outfit and midi or maxi dresses/skirts only need basic additions to compliment the look. Simplicity is key with this print as it is inherently very busy and full on.

Check out a few ways to werrrrkk this seasons must have print below;

Aztec print only requires plain and simple additions to finish off the look.

I have been away for a hot second due to exams. I have officially finished Law school, which means no more education for me, ever!! YAY!

By Gods grace I will be posting more frequently so watch this space!
Also, if you would like to be featured, please send me an email!

Until next time, have a great day!

Lots of Love

Colour Blocking Spring!

Hello Belles!!

Hope you are enjoying the beautiful, yet slightly confused, weather! The sun has been very deceitful! You would think that it was T-shirt weather the way it shines so brightly! But by the time you step outside the cold wind knocks you sideways!
Either way, I am thankful! As the appearance of Mr Sun and no more Ms Snow means that Spring is officially here! Yay! So its now time to bring out your floral print and pastel shades... BUT .... instead of the usual predictable soft colours of Spring why not inject a splodge of COLOUR into your wardrobe by throwing together a few Colour Block-er-rific outfits!

Yes I know colour blocking was so "last season", but mi ner ker!! I will rock it anyways and start a revolution!! Are you with me!! .........

*silence*
*that one awkward cough, from that one person who just couldn't hold it in*

em... well... I guess I should just go ahead and proceed with this post! Lol!

I rocked both of the outfits below to church, utilising the same bright raspberry coloured blazer to pull together two very different looks.
Berries & Blues

The 'sun' is in my eyes!

Blazer from local market, skirt from Miss Selfridge, shoes & top from Primark

Raspberry and Yellow

Berry and Yellow! Berry and Yellow!

Shoes from TK Maxx, Top from H&M, Skirt from Peacocks

Colour Blocking - Cheat Sheet!

To discover colours which you can mix and match to create the perfect 'colour blocked' outfit take a look at the colour wheel below. The trick is to choose the shades which are directly opposite each other on the colour wheel, this will help to create a beautifully colour blocked outfit without the awkward "did she dress in the dark" side eyes.

For more tips on the art of colour blocking check out this---> blog. I never knew fashion could be so technical!!

Some Extra Quirky Tricks

Marc Jacobs suggests:

For a harmonious look mix bright pinks with vivid fuchsias, turquoise with royal blue and keep warmer tones like orange and red together. Accessorise with neutral - toned shoes.
To really MIX IT UP  work regal purples in with contrasting, firey oranges or lime green with rosebud pink.

Phew! You made it to the end! Have I made a colour block revolutionary out of you? I hope so!

Until the next post, have an amazing week!

Much Love

Accessory Inspiration: Collar Tips - what's that on your collar?

Hey yall! Hope you are all good?!

Check out these beautiful collar tips rocked by Blessing O a truly fabulous fashionista!

They add an 'old western glam' to a shirt, top or dress - anything which has a collar and for £4.99 (New Look), they are an inexpensive way to upcycle that old shirt!

Inspired by Blessing's collar tips I have found a few other styles which are now on my wish list... after all my birthday IS coming soon :)

Regal Rose have these beautiful vintage gold collar tips on sale for £10!

Missguided steps it up a notch with these Klue Bird Collar Tips.

Collar tips are an inexpensive investment that adds a bit of bling to an outfit!

On another note, I have just returned from a church Youth Camp in Kidderminster which was an amazing time spent with God away from the hustle and bustle of life. Whilst there
I spotted a number of gorgeous outfits rocked by the young ladies in attendance, so hopefully I will be able to get a few photos up of some of the outfits to provide yall with some spring/summer modest fashion ideas!

In the meantime, God bless!

Guacamole Quickie!

Hell--loo!

Recently I have been having a strange craving for guacamole, i'm not the biggest fan of the green stuff, but for some reason I really wanted to try my hand at making a batch.

The recipe I found (below) is pretty straight forward and I was able to whip up a batch in less than 15mins. I adjusted the portion sizes as I only wanted to make a batch, also I didn't have any coriander or chillies to hand so I just used the dried pepper (the African red pepper, i only used a sprinkle as that stuff is HOT!) instead.

  • Ingredients

    4 mild chillies finely chopped
    Bunch coriander finely chopped
    tomatoes, finely chopped
    salt, to taste
    onion, finely chopped
    ½ lime, juice only
    3 ripe avocados

    Preparation Method

    1. In a pestle and mortar, pound the chillies, coriander, tomatoes, salt and onion to a fine paste.
     2. Add a little water and lime juice to make a looser mixture. Mash in the avocados. Serve.

And VOILA!!!! Served with a few Sainsbury's basic nachos (i'm still a student, I have to save those pennies!) it is a perfect healthy snack! :)

SPRING IS HERE!! Well... kind of!! The breeze in London is enough to knock you back to winter brrr!!

I will be posting up some spring outfits soon, so please stay tuned!

Accidental BIG CHOP!!!

Hello!
I can imagine the confusion that one may feel after reading the title of this post.... but yes.. I 'accidentally' performed the Big Chop on my natural hair!!! The best way to tell this story is in a fairytale format as they always end "happily ever after"....
IMG-20130408-WA0011
Before the Big Chop
Once Upon A Time there was a Princess (hey I am a child of a KING after all ;)) who lived in the deep Southern part of the land of Pienmash.
On the 9th of April 2013 the Princess found that her natural tresses were being attacked by split end monsters and therefore needed to be vanquished with a quick trim.
In a particular section the Princess saw an area where the heat dragon had damaged her hair, so in a quick movement she snipped this section off "snip" then another section "snip, snip" before she knew it the front quarter of her hair had become significantly and unexpectedly shorter! (the Princess had been previously diagnosed with EdwardScissorHands Syndrome so she should not have been cutting hair unsupervised!)
"Oh well" she thought, "I may as well even it all out" ... However, she realised halfway through her hair cut that the result was a lot SHORTER than expected... my oh my did she scream!!
So here she is now, with a TWA (Teeny Weeny Afro) and thus she decides that she will have to commence her journey to get her afro back, healthier and longer than ever before and live happily ever after!!
The End
bigchop
After the Accidental Big Chop
So.... that's my story!! Lol!! Although my BC was unintentional I am excited to start a new journey in getting to know my hair! This is the shortest that I have ever had my hair so it is quite an interesting experience.
As a result of my recent episode my blog will include more hair related posts, as well as the fashion posts and they will hopefully be a lot more consistent!
If you have any advice for individuals with TWA's please hook a sista up!! I have been walking around in a daze since yesterday lol!
Much love

BOW Fabulous!

Hello All!!
Hope everyone is A ok? (what does A-OK mean? I always hear it being said by a buff looking soldier in an action movie, but i never actually get what it means...Actually OK maybe?) Anywhoo, back to the post at hand...
A quick fix "quirk" maker to any outfit is the addition of a cute bow tie! These can be added to any outfit choice, whether formal or casual to add an extra quirky pazaaoooii!!
You can buy bow ties in a variety of colours, shapes and sizes in most stores, especially from online shops such as Ebay.
I am loving this monochrome, stripped bow-tie (below) for £14.99 from the online store www.ties2go.co.uk as it is bang on trend with spring 2013's stripped/monochrome theme. An instant trend setter! Let me know if you find any unique ones so that I can "Bow-row" it!! ;) HA!
Black and White, stripped bow tie - Get your trend on!
My sis and I are prone to wearing a bow tie or two, and we always try and mix it up... hopefully proving that even dressed modestly, you can add a lirraall bit of 'funkiness'!
